Orthopaedics
The physiotherapy assessment and treatment of orthopaedic conditions, including spinal and peripheral joints, often involves the use of manual therapy to restore functional movement and resolve pain.
At Physio Sports Care Centre, we recognize the importance of assessing and re-assessing conditions to accurately identify problem areas in order to provide physiotherapy treatment based on those findings. Identification of the cause of pain and dysfunction is the most important step in recovery. The determination of all factors contributing to a patient’s condition will help in the development of a treatment plan that addresses all issues.
Our goal is to help you resume the daily activities you love and return to (or begin) exercising and/or sporting activities.
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy is a specialized field of physiotherapy that uses a specific evaluation of the joints, muscles, nerves, and soft tissues around the joints. It is a therapeutic, hands-on approach to evaluating and mobilizing the joints in order to increase range of motion, improve extensibility and restore function. The joint techniques may include soft tissue and joint mobilizations and manipulation.
Soft tissue mobilization techniques are used as an approach to affect the myofascial system, restore mobility and release trigger points that produce pain. These treatment techniques are combined with therapeutic exercise under the direction of our Registered Kinesiologists to prevent injuries and to maintain strength and flexibility.
Neck and Back Pain
Desk jobs, computers, chairs, and lifting heavy objects may contribute to the causes of neck pain—which in turn can also extend to shoulder and arm pain, headaches and dizziness. It is estimated that each year, up to 3.5 million Canadians suffer from neck pain that limits their activities.
Low back pain is also a common complaint that reportedly affects up to 80 percent of the population at least once in their lifetime. A recurrence of low back pain or chronic low back pain is seen in 10 to 40 percent of this population. Identifying the causes contributing to your low back pain is essential.
The physiotherapists at Physio Sports Care Centre will take the time to assess, treat, prevent, and decrease recurring incidents of neck and back pain. The identification of causes and the use of manual therapy along with exercise will assist in the treatment of neck and back pain in order to return to your activities of daily and sporting life.
Treatment for Concussions and Benign Positional Vertigo (BBPV)
Sport-related concussions have been in the forefront of the news. At Physio Sports Care Centre, our focus is to promote evidence-based assessment, ensure professional collaboration with physicians, and develop a customized plan of treatment for concussion management. Our goal is to help you work toward a safe return to daily and school activities and a successful return to sport.
Benign Positional Vertigo (BBPV) can be assessed and treated with the use of manual therapy, positional techniques and education as an approach to alleviate the symptoms.
Neurodynamics
Neurodynamics involves the assessment and treatment of nerve-related issues that result in pain. Mobility of the nervous system may be affected following an injury or spinal surgery. The resulting scar tissue or dural adhesions can cause diffuse pain and if not detected, may escape diagnosis and fail to be resolved. At Physio Sports Care Centre, we identify any limitations that may be responsible for your pain and provide guidance about how to restore mobility within the nervous system.
Education
Patient education is an important part of physiotherapy. We take the time to teach our patients about a disease or injury and we are committed to addressing any questions or concerns. We use photos and provide information that can be easily understood and will help alleviate any fears. Education concerning modification of activities, training and lifestyle changes will also assist in helping you prevent further injury.
Modalities
Treatment modalities such as ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Interferential Current (IFC) and Neurocryostimulation are used to alleviate pain and re-educate muscle function. At Physio Sports Care Centre, we may use modalities combined with manual therapy and education to facilitate your recovery from injury.
Therapeutic Taping
“Kinesiotaping” is used to provide support to an inflamed joint and assist in reducing pain and swelling. It can also be used to facilitate postural correction. This tape, without restricting movement, helps to support the tissue and joints as they heal. Athletic taping techniques are used to increase stability and provide added support to soft tissues for additional protection when you return to sport.
Total-Body Physiotherapy Assessment
A total-body physiotherapy assessment can be done by a Registered Physiotherapist to identify joint restrictions, movement dysfunctions and muscle imbalances that may contribute to your existing or upcoming health issues. A proactive approach, including early identification and prevention, is the key to your success. If you require further intervention through physiotherapy treatment, we can provide you with options to help restore you to full function.
